EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Operational Support Division include EMS, Regional Communications, Fleet Maintenance, Telecommunications, Emergency Operations Center, and EMS Training and Education.  Assistant Chief Bill Boler has been with SFD since 1981.

Communications Center:  The Regional Communications Center provides dispatching services for SFD, Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Jerome, Montezuma-Rimrock, Pinewood, Mayer, Black Canyon City, and Verde Valley Fire Districts and Verde Valley Ambulance Company.  The Communications Center is the heart of radio communications and dispatching for most of the Verde Valley.

Fleet Maintenance:  SFD has a full automotive shop and two mechanics charged with the responsibility of keeping SFD ambulances, fire apparatus, and vehicles running safely and efficiently.  Services provided include routine vehicle maintenance and repairs, LOF services, and lighting, brakes, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical repairs.  The mechanics also mount various equipment in the vehicles and apparatus.

Telecommunications Technicians:  SFD’s Telecommunications Manager and Radio Technicians have ultimate responsibility for the installation and maintenance of SFD’s essential technology, infrastructure, including mobile, portable, and fixed radio frequency transmitters and receivers; digital and analog microwave RF transceivers at the DS-3  level; digital and analog multiplex carrier equipment; mobile data systems, telephone systems; vehicular emergency lighting and siren systems, radio consoles and related systems and:

User Support:  This section is ultimately responsible for the maintenance of the computer network system.  SFD is dependent on computer equipment for dispatching, internal communications, word processing, data entry, record keeping – a whole array of common business requirements.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS): This is the busiest area for SFD.  EMS must constantly evolve to keep pace with the many changes in the medical field that impact paramedics and EMTs.  EMS responders are both full time and reserve members of SFD.  The scope of EMS includes:

EMS Training and Education:  The EMT-Basic and Paramedics require programs to upgrade to new standards and maintain skills for the future.  IEMTs and CEPs utilizing the 12- lead EKG program constantly train to remain proficient.  The EMS Chief maintains continuing education programs.

EMS Administration:  SFD ambulances, bio-medical, and CPR equipment must be kept in top shape.  EMS certification is a growing challenge as SFD continues to add personnel in this area.

EMS Operations:  The daily challenge is to provide coverage for the entire fire district.  Other than the taxes received from property owners, EMS is the single largest revenue producer for SFD because of the ambulance service.

PAD Program:  Public Access Defibrillation Program (PAD) is an opportunity for SFD to provide a public service with the potential for saving lives! This program provides Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for service providers at various specified locations throughout the fire district.  This program also provides maintenance and support for the AEDs.  SFD employees oversee the program and ensure that volunteers are exposed to a high-quality training program to allow them to participate.

Exposure Control Plan:  The program ensures current vaccinations for personnel and annual testing for infection control issues.
