SFD’s highly trained Hazmat Team responds to incidents to keep citizens safe.

Hazardous materials are a part of our everyday life. In fact, you can find them in about a half a million products that we commonly use in our homes — products that we store in quantities of 3 to 10 gallons at any given time. Because the risks are so common, SFD certifies each of its firefighters to identify hazardous materials, evacuate citizens, and order the appropriate resources to manage the emergency.

Of course, not all incidents involve household products. SFD’s Hazmat Team handles dangerous situations involving large-scale hazardous material incidents. The team, which consists of 10 “Hazmat Technician” firefighters, uses state-of-the-art equipment to locate, identify, isolate, and nullify the dangerous material while rescuing victims. It works with other fire agencies to handle incidents throughout the Verde Valley. SFD also participates in the Department of Homeland Security’s Regional Response Team.
