Fire Restriction Stages

Stage I Fire Restrictions within the Sedona Fire District:

What is Prohibited:
• No building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire except in Forest Service developed recreation sites (not including dispersed camping areas).
• No smoking except in an enclosed vehicle or building on USFS managed forestlands, or in specific developed recreation sites.

What is allowed:
• Petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices providing such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specification for safety.
• The use of commercially manufactured charcoal grills or wood smokers is allowed on private property as long as a tight fitting lid is in place during use and sparks and fire brands are contained within the device. Devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum, LPG, or LNG are always allowed so long as the flame may be immediately extinguished without residual combustion.
• Shooting firearms IS allowed. Just make sure to follow all federal, state & local regulations: No shooting within 150 yards of a campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area, residence or building. No shooting across a road, trail or body of water, or in any manner or place whereby any person property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge. No shooting in a cave. Use of explosive targets, tracer rounds, or incendiary ammunition is prohibited.
• National forest fire restrictions can vary from forest to forest, and can differ from local, county and state fire restrictions. Recreators are responsible for knowing the jurisdiction of the land they are recreating on and abiding by restrictions, as well as other rules and regulations.

Sedona Fire District may establish additional requirements, up to and including the extinguishment of any fire, the revocation of any permit, and a ban on chainsaws or other equipment on a case-by-case basis to ensure the public health, safety and welfare.

Stage II Fire Restrictions:

  • PROHIBITED:
    • No fires, campfires, charcoal, coal, or wood stoves. (except using a device that is solely
      fueled by liquid petroleum, LPG, or LNG fuels and that can be immediately turned off,
      extinguishing the flame without residual combustion, are allowed in areas that are barren
      or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the
      device). The use of wood and charcoal in an enclosed device to cook at one- and two-family dwellings and at fixed restaurant sites is allowed.
    • Smoking in public (except within an enclosed vehicle or building).
    • Using an explosive
    • Fireworks – Possessing, discharging, or using any fireworks or pyrotechnic device.
    • Outdoor welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame without a hot
      work permit. Hot work permits shall be revoked during periods of Red Flag Warnings.
    • Combustion Engine – Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine
      without a spark-arresting device properly installed and maintained. (Does not include
      motor vehicles and is intended for things such as landscaping tools).
    • Discharging firearms, air rifles, or gas guns (except while engaged in a lawful hunt
      pursuant to state, federal or tribal laws or regulations).
    • Off-road – Possessing or using a motor vehicle off National Forest System roads
      (Vehicles must stay on open Forest Roads and cannot drive/park over any vegetation at
      any time).
  • ALLOWED:
    • The use of indoor fireplaces
    • Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) or Natural Gas (LNG) grills, fireplaces, and appliances that
      can be immediately turned off, extinguishing the flame without residual combustion
    • Cooking with charcoal or wood on private property in an appliance with a tight-fitting
      lid. The lid must be in place while cooking.
    • The use of power equipment on private property for the purpose of landscaping, fuel
      mitigation, etc. A spark arrester must be in place, and a fire watch shall be posted for 30
      minutes after cessation of work. Operators shall be equipped with a means to extinguish
      any fire. Good safety practices should also include limiting the use of power equipment
      to before 9:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. when temperatures are lower and relative humidity
      is higher. Commercial operators engaged in the removal and maintenance of vegetation
      to promote healthy plants; removal of accumulated detritus; fire prescribed cutting or
      utility easement right of way maintenance; and other activities that work to lessen fuel
      load and increase fire safety around structures and populated areas, may operate outside
      these hours when all other safety guidelines are followed. No power equipment use is
      allowed during Red Flag weather days.
    • While smoking outside on private property is discouraged, it is permissible so long as
      ashes and cigarette butts are discarded in non-combustible, windproof receptacles.
