Ongoing Pet Fire Safety Resources

The City of Sedona proclaimed the week of May 5, 2025, as Keep Your Pets Fire Safe Week. This initiative was sponsored by the Sedona Fire District (SFD) in partnership with the Humane Society of Sedona, the Sedona Community Center (SCC), and the Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition (VVCC).

Throughout the week, SFD hosted several activities, including distributing free pet fire safety information and pet alert stickers at all fire stations, organizing a “pet locator alert walk” at Sunset Village, and offering residents the opportunity to register their pets for emergency preparedness.

Although the designated week has ended, you can still review helpful fire safety tips below and register your pet with the Sedona Fire District. This information helps first responders be better prepared in the event of a fire-related emergency at your home.

In Home Safety Tips

  • Never leave pets alone around an open flame. Consider flameless candles.

  • Keep pets away from candles, stoves, lamps and space heaters.

  • Always use a metal or heat tempered glass screen on your fireplace and keep it in place.

  • Ensure loose wires are secured and other potential hazards removed to deter pets from chewing on them.

  • Beware of glass water bowls on wooden decks. Use ceramic bowls outside.

Routine Precautions

  • Maintain fire precautions like checking that your fire alarms work and having fire extinguishers handy.

  • Learn your pet’s hiding places so you can quickly search for them.

  • Train your pets to come when you call.

  • Make sure your pet has proper identification, including a tag and is chipped, in case you are separated while escaping a fire.

  • Keep outdoor pens and kennels away from bushy areas which can catch fire.

  • Do not go back into a fire to rescue your pet.  Tell firefighters where your pet may be located.  Ideally, have a Rescue Retriever installed in the area where your pet is likely to hide.

When Leaving A Pet Home Alone

  • Put Pet Alert signs on the windows of your home and, if you have a Rescue Retriever, put the Rescue Retriever sign on or near your front door to alert fire fighters

  • Secure young pets and keep them confined away from potential fire starting hazards and near entrances where they can easily be found.

  • Keep collars on pets and leashes readily accessible for firefighters.
